ProctorU Wins 2019 EdTech Breakthrough Award

Los Angeles, CA – Today, EdTech Breakthrough, a leading market intelligence organization that recognizes top companies and solutions in the global educational technology market, named ProctorU Live+ as the winner of its “Best Online Proctoring Solution” award in the inaugural EdTech Breakthrough Awards program.

In 2008, ProctorU pioneered the first live online proctoring solution in higher education, and now, ten years later, the company continues to innovate by delivering a multi-layered live online proctoring solution, ProctorU Live+.

ProctorU Live+ is a service that augments live proctors using artificial intelligence (AI) to flag suspicious test-taker activity. The entire process is overseen by human interventionists who routinely audit live sessions and are specifically trained to handle potential breaches of integrity. Since Live+ was unveiled last year, integrity violation prevention among users has increased 54 percent, underscoring its effectiveness.

“EdTech Breakthrough Awards is pleased to award EdTech pioneer and leading innovator, ProctorU, with our 2019 award for Best Online Proctoring Solution,” said James Johnson, managing director, EdTech Breakthrough. “While we considered many different companies for this award, we were particularly impressed by ProctorU’s AI-powered platform and their innovative use of big data to significantly improve proctoring, with measurable results of its effectiveness. The use of tools and technologies such as AI and data analytics helped ProctorU ‘breakthrough’ the competitors in the proctoring space, and we congratulate the company on their well-deserved 2019 EdTech Breakthrough Award.”

The mission of the EdTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of educational technology categories, including Student Engagement, School Administration, Adaptive Learning, STEM Education, e-Learning, Career Preparation and many others. This year’s program attracted more than 1,500 nominations from over 12 different countries throughout the world.

ProctorU Live+ uses a supervised machine learning model to train an AI platform to complement and improve the performance of live proctors. The platform is currently being trained to recognize and flag suspicious behavior in identity fraud, cheating on exams, and content theft based on multiple machine learning technologies including pattern, voice, object, plane, and facial recognition; speech-to-text; eye movement detection; and more.

“We are thrilled to accept the award from EdTech Breakthrough recognizing our online proctoring solutions and excited about the future of live online proctoring,” said Scott McFarland, ProctorU CEO. “We are transforming the proctoring space through our forward-thinking utilization of big data and artificial intelligence. In the future, there will be no need for humans to watch every single test-taker. This software will change the role of the proctor to that of an interventionist with a higher rate of accuracy at a lower cost.”
